Sunday, September 8, 2019

Sunday September 8, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Riley County Family and Child Resource Center, 2101 Claflin Road (West End Room, access from back parking lot) Dr. Juti Winchester will speak on "Men on a Mission: The Arizona Territorial Governor's Party on the Santa Fe Trail in 1863." This program, sponsored by the Kansas Corral of the Westerners, is free and open to the public.
In February 1863 President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill providing for the Territory of Arizona and appointed John N. Goodwin Governor. Godwin and his party of other appointed officials traveled to the new Arizona Territory down the Santa Fe Trail from Leavenworth, Kansas by wagon train in December 1863.
Dr. Juti Winchester is an Assistant Professor at Fort Hays State University. She received her Ph.D. from Northern Arizona University. She has written extensively on the American West and is a Past President of Westerners International.
